Two operators manage the SPOT system: a commercial operator and a satellite operator.

Spot Image is the commercial operator. As such, it programs the SPOT satellites, processes the imagery they acquire, and generates and distributes products. It has developed the Commercial Operations Ground Segment (SSOC) for this purpose.

CNES is the satellite operator. As such, it is responsible for orbit control operations and system performance at its Satellite Operations Ground Segment (SSOS).

SPOT 5 is set to join its three sister satellites-SPOT 1, SPOT 2 and SPOT 4, all operating on the same orbit-in May 2002.

The SPOT system

The SPOT system is designed to achieve optimum image quality in terms of resolution and solar illumination and to respond quickly to user requests.

SPOT 5 will ensure true continuity of service, with the same features that have made the SPOT system's reputation. Moreover, it will offer significantly improved resolution (2.5 metres in black and white and 10 metres in colour) and operational capabilities, chiefly through a new High-Resolution Stereoscopic instrument (HRS).
